ECU vs TCU: what’s the difference?

The ECU runs the engine. The TCU runs the gearbox. They’re separate computers — and after a power remap, matching them often makes the car feel finished.

What is an ECU?

The ECU (Engine Control Unit) — sometimes called the PCM or ECM — manages fuelling, ignition/timing (where applicable), boost, torque limits and emissions strategies. A Stage 1 or economy remap changes software inside this unit. Learn more about hardware families in types of ECUs explained.

What is a TCU?

The TCU (Transmission Control Unit) — also called a gearbox ECU — controls clutch pressures, shift points, torque limits and lock-up behaviour on automatics, dual-clutch (DSG/DCT) and some automated manuals. Key differences at a glance

  • Job: ECU = engine; TCU = gearbox
  • Feel: ECU remap = power/torque/response; TCU remap = shift quality, hold gears, clutch behaviour
  • When both matter: Extra engine torque can hit factory gearbox limits — a TCU map can raise safe limits and smooth shifts
  • Reading method: Both may use OBD, bench or boot depending on the unit

Do I need both?

Many Stage 1 cars feel great on ECU alone. Automatics and DSGs that slip, flare or shift early after a remap often benefit from a matching TCU calibration. Manual gearboxes don’t have a TCU remap in the same way.
