What is torque monitoring?

The ECU constantly estimates how much torque the engine is producing and how much the driver is requesting (via the accelerator). It compares those values against limiters for the gearbox, clutch, drivetrain and emissions strategy. If calculated torque exceeds a limit, the ECU cuts fuel, boost or throttle.
