AdBlue systems explained (UK)

Modern diesels use AdBlue (SCR) to cut NOx. Here’s how the system works, why faults appear, and what is — and isn’t — legal for road vehicles in the UK.

Important: Torque Lab Ltd does not offer AdBlue / SCR deletion for vehicles used on UK public roads. Disabling emissions equipment for road use is illegal.

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a urea solution injected into the exhaust as part of an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. It helps convert harmful nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. Most post-2015 Euro 6 diesels — cars and vans — use it.

Common AdBlue issues

  • Low fluid warnings and range countdowns
  • Crystallisation in injectors or lines
  • Failed NOx sensors or tank heaters
  • Limp mode or no-start after ignored warnings
  • Expensive dealer repairs on pumps and tanks

Legal fixes

Top up with quality AdBlue, diagnose sensor/pump faults, and repair or replace failed components. Shortcuts that delete the system for road use risk MOT failure, insurance issues and enforcement action.

Remapping and AdBlue

A proper Stage 1 or economy remap on a healthy Euro 6 diesel keeps AdBlue functioning. We calibrate for performance or economy without removing SCR. See also EGR systems and DPF UK law.
